Fostering a brighter tomorrow through dyslexia therapy and literacy education.

Allow me to introduce myself: I am April Clements, an experienced educator with over ten years of dedicated service in the field of education. I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education, a Master's Degree in Special Education ( K-12) and an Education Specialist Degree in K-12 Teaching and Learning. My commitment to excellence in teaching led me to obtain certification in Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS), based on the Science of Reading. I am a Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT), which equips me with specialized skills to support students with written-language disorders, including dyslexia. My approach to education centers on delivering explicit, systematic, and sequential Multisensory Structured Language dyslexia therapy, which is proven to foster accuracy, knowledge, and independence in students facing such challenges.

We understand that dyslexia affects individuals differently. We create customized learning plans to cater to specific student needs, ensuring progress. Student performance on initial dyslexia assessments are analyzed and an intervention plan is created. All intervention plans are adjusted as needed.

At Above and Beyond Literacy, we believe that literacy is the key to unlocking endless opportunities in life. Our programs are built on evidence-based practices and delivered by experienced educators who are dedicated to your success. From multisensory dyslexia therapy to structured literacy instruction, we provide a supportive environment where learners of all ages can thrive.

The roundtable showcased K-12 educators from across Alabama enrolled in the University of Alabama CALT program, providing them a platform to share their experiences supporting students with dyslexia in their schools and the positive impacts they've seen from the CALT program. Senators Britt and Cassidy are deeply committed to finding ways to support teachers and students on a federal level.

U.S. Senator Katie Britt, an alumna of the University of Alabama, visited her alma mater to engage in a roundtable discussion focusing on dyslexia education and the university's Certified Academic Language Therapist program. Accompanying her were U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Dr. Laura Cassidy, a Dyslexia Resource Center board member, and participants from the university's CALT program.
Senator Britt emphasized the far-reaching impact of the CALT program, highlighting its role not only in supporting students but also in equipping teachers with essential tools, innovative approaches, and the underlying scientific principles. She emphasized how this knowledge empowers educators to return to their communities and positively influence the lives of children.

It is an incredible honor to be recognized by Governor Kay Ivy for obtaining my Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) certification and receiving my CALT pin.
